According to The Japan Textiles Importers Association report on 2016 apparel imports, based on Ministry of Finance provisional trade statistics, the import value dropped 12.1% from the previous year to 2,540,175 million yen. Meanwhile, the annual import quantity rose by 1.6% to 3,622.85 million units.

2016 apparel imports including accessories decreased by 0.1% in volume and fell 12.2% in value to 1,005,417 tons worth 2,908.6 billion yen.

Imports from ASEAN grew by 11.5% in quantity to 841.58 million units. Imports in 2015 also grew at about the same rate of 12%. While imports from Indonesia decreased by 2.6% to 126.27 million units, imports from Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar continued to register growths of over 10%. The share of ASEAN in Japanese apparel imports was 24.3% in value (up 2.7 percentage points) and 23.2% in volume (up 2.0 points).

2016 imports from China (the largest supplier) decreased by 3.2% in volume and 16.9% in value to 2,469.50 million units worth 1,619,989 million yen.
