According to the Japan Department Stores Association, October 2018 same-store sales of apparel at member stores across the nation (79 firms, 219 stores) decreased by 1.0% compared to the same month of last year to 156,479 million yen. It was the fourth consecutive month that apparel sales posted a decrease.

Sales of men’s and children’s wear decreased for four straight months: men’s wear, 35,203 million yen (down 3.2%) and children’s wear, 9,824 million yen (down 7.0%).

Meanwhile, sales of women’s wear increased by 0.5% to 101,107 million yen, thus increasing for the first time in four months.

Total sales including non-apparel items increased by 1.6% to 471,757 million yen, also the first increase in four months.
