CIRFS (Brussels-based European Man-made Fibres Association, representing the European man-made fiber industry) has published its latest statistical report on developments in the world’s man-made fiber industry.

Information on Man-made Fibres is the 54th edition of this valuable summary of all available information about this dynamic and growing industry. It is a compilation of data on:

  • Production of acrylic, cellulosic, nylon, polyester, polypropylene, wool and cotton, in the world as a whole and in all countries for which data exists
  • Consumption
  • World trade in man-made fibers, yarns and fabrics

According to CIRFS Director-General Frédéric Van Houte, this CIRFS report shows continued and solid growth of the world’s man-made fiber industry, while cotton and wool shares stagnate. It confirms the strength of global production of man-made fibers, and their dominant share in world demand for fibers. In 2017, MMF represented 72% of all textile fibers produced worldwide, this percentage going up to 79% in Europe.

During the last 10 years, man-made fibers production grew by around 4% annually, while cotton fluctuated and wool decreased by 1.0%. This shows the uninterrupted success of man-made fibers. Europe is the world’s largest exporter of cellulosic fibers and the largest producer of ultra-high strength fibers and polypropylene fibers. It is one of the global leaders in man-made fibers innovations and quality. Its output is used in a huge variety of applications, including not only fashion, but also home textiles and a rising number of different technical uses.
