Between May 20th and June 8th, 2020, the International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) conducted its 4th ITMF Corona-Survey among its members and affiliated companies and associations. A total of around 600 companies and associations from around the world participated in this survey on the impact the coronavirus pandemic had on the global textile value chain.

On a global scale, current orders continued to decrease on average by more than 40%. When looking at their expected turnovers in 2020 compared to 2019, the expectations remained unchanged since the 3rd ITMF Corona-Survey. On average, companies expect their turnovers to plummet 32%. The range differs among regions, from 22% in Southeast Asia to 36% in East Asia.

In all of the segments of the textile supply chain – from spinners to garment manufacturers – orders recorded significant decreases. Also, integrated manufacturers seemed to have fared slightly better with a decrease of 26%, while other segments expect their turnovers to fall in the range from 31% to 34% in 2020.

In all segments of the global textile value chain, orders are down in the range from 37% to 46%. Their turnovers in 2020 are down in the range from 26% to 34% compared to 2019.

The majority (23%) of the survey respondents expect to return to pre-crisis levels again in the first quarter of 2021, followed by 21% in the second quarter of 2021. Another 14% expect that this will be the case in the third quarter of 2021. Nevertheless, 20% of the survey respondents expect a faster recovery in the fourth quarter of this year.
