According to a survey report from Yano Research Institute Ltd., the Japanese home fashion retail market grew by 2.1% in 2015 compared to the previous year to 3,507 billion yen.

Factors for the market growth are an increase in overseas brands having superior functions and design and an expansion of the kitchenware and tableware markets, which are supported by a rise in kitchen tools thanks to an increase in TV cooking programs. In addition, among stores that propose lifestyles beyond the categories of food, clothing and shelter, home furniture enjoyed strong sales, as more consumers purchased at stores that offer everything from houseware to furniture.

The market scale is forecast to grow 1.9% in 2016 to 3,574 trillion yen. The breakdown is: bedlinens and bedding, 690 billion yen (down 0.3%); towels, 161 billion yen (up 0.6%); nightwear and home wear, 170 billion yen (up 3.0%); home furniture, 1,700 billion yen (up 4.9%); interior fabrics, 583 billion yen (down 0.2%); home lighting fixtures, 447 billion yen (up 0.7%); and kitchenware and tableware, 453 billion yen (up 2.5%).
