According to import statistics compiled by the Japan Spinners’ Association based on Ministry of Finance trade statistics, cotton yarn imports during January-June 2019 decreased by 9.9% year-on-year to 116,968 bales, of which combed yarn declined by 4.4% to 59,944 bales. Demand for cotton yarn in the Japanese market lacked vigor for an upswing.
Cotton yarn imports from Indonesia (the largest supplier) fell 15.6% to 39,367 bales. Imports from Pakistan also dropped 26.9% to 19,411 bales. Since imports from Pakistan largely consist of carded yarn, the decrease in demand for carded yarn centering on towel applications is considered to be sharp.
Meanwhile, first-half imports from India increased by 5.4% to 23,204 bales. Imports from India are composed mainly of combed yarn, of which the popularity is deep-rooted in the high-class sector.
Imports of blended yarns fell 17.9% to 17,195 bales.
