According to statistics on Japanese imports of pure cotton yarns, as compiled by the Japan Spinners’ Association based on trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance, 2019 imports fell 11.7% from the previous year to 232,539 131.436-kg bales, of which combed yarns dropped 10.1% to 115,211 bales.
The sharp decrease is attributed to a cool down of domestic demand for cotton yarns.
By country, imports from Indonesia, the largest supplier, dropped 14.9% to 76,944 bales. Imports from Pakistan, which consist largely of carded yarns for towels, etc., fell 32.1% to 40,837 bales. Meanwhile, imports from India, which are largely composed of combed yarns, were firm with a 1.3% rise to 44,526 bales, indicating the strong popularity of Indian yarns.
Imports of cotton blended yarns also sharply decreased by 11.3% to 32,384 bales. As in the case of pure cotton yarns, domestic yarn demand showed a distinct decline.
