The U.S. Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA) reported that the nation’s imports of textiles and apparel in April 2020 fell 23.6% compared to the same month of last year to 4,009.5 million square meter equivalents (MSME): textiles, 2,797.7 MSME (down 12.8%) and apparel, 1,211.8 MSME (down 40.5%).
In dollars, April imports dropped 38.3% to US$5,144.17 million: textiles, US$1,749.24 million (down 20.8%) and apparel, US$3,414.93 million (down 44.6%).
The breakdown of textile imports was: yarns, 273.3 MSME (down 11.9%); fabrics, 1,029.4 MSME (down 5.8%); and made-ups, 1,494.9 MSME (down 17.2%).
April imports from China fell 31.6% in quantity to 1,473.5 MSME: textiles, 1,133.7 MSME (down 24.1%) and apparel, 339.9 MSME (down 48.4%). The value dropped 49.8% to US$11,88.20 million: textiles, US$567.20 million (down 33.3%) and apparel US$621.00 million (down 59.1%).
Imports from India in April decreased by 16.7% to 436.7 MSME: textiles, 371.0 MSME (down 9.8%) and apparel, 65.7 MSME (down 41.9%). The value fell 32.9% to US$484.98 million: textiles, US$264.48 million (down 16.1%) and apparel, US$220.50 million (down 45.9%).
Imports from Vietnam decreased by 13.2% to 365.5 MSME: textiles, 120.5 MSME (down 23.2%) and apparel, 244.9 MSME (down 24.2%). The value declined by 18.6% to US$879.49 million: textiles, US$74.14 million (up 0.9%) and apparel, US$805.35 million (down 20.0%).
The January-April import volume of textiles and apparel declined by 13.8% year-on-year to 18,666.8 MSME: textiles, 11,450.2 MSME (down 10.6%) and apparel, 7,216.5 MSME (down 18.4%). The value dropped 18.0% to US$28,773.02 million: textiles, US$7,509.27 million (down 13.2%) and apparel, US$21,263.75 million (down 19.6%).
