The Japan Department Store Association reported that same-store sales at member stores throughout Japan (81 firms, 234 stores) decreased by 3.9% in October 2016 from the same month of last year to 475,515 million yen, thus decreasing for the eighth consecutive month.
Higher temperatures during the month decreased apparel sales by 6.5% to 166,710 million yen, thus decreasing for twelve straight months. However, apparel showed a gradual recovery as the decrease was smaller than the previous month. Itemwise, sales of men’s wear declined by 5.4% to 36,811 million yen, along with those of women’s wear by 7.1% to 107,301 million yen, and children wear by 2.7% to 11,007 million yen.
