According to the Japan Sewing Machinery Manufacturers Association (JASMA), the nation production of household and industrial sewing machines in 2016 rose by 1.3% over the previous year to 160,619, of which industrial sewing machines decreased by 2.1% to 98,939. The total production value declined by 3.1% to 32,519 million yen, of which industrial sewing machines were down 3.1% to 29,369 million yen.

2016 exports of household and industrial sewing machines increased by 4.2% over the previous year to 432,785, of which industrial sewing machines decreased by 0.6% to 154,159. In value, total exports decreased by 4.5% to 38,211 million yen, of which industrial sewing machines declined by 4.5% to 35,206 million yen.

2016 production and sales toward the Japanese domestic market decreased for most of the months, and the growth was not sharp for months when production and sales increased. Exports centering on those to Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe sharply increased in some of the months, indicating that sewing machines continued to be in demand worldwide.
