According to the Japan Chemical Fibers Association, the nation’s production of man-made fibers in 2017 decreased by 0.9% compared to the previous year to 903,253 tons. Of this, synthetic fibers declined by 3.2% to 720,447 tons, while cellulosic fibers increased by 9.0% to 182,806 tons.

Among major fiber items, nylon filament production grew by 8.1% to 96,650 tons. Application in down jackets and outdoor wear was firm, and use for airbags was strong.

Acrylic staple fiber production decreased by 5.4% to 120,271 tons. Use for warmth-retaining underwear was vigorous, whereas industrial and bedding applications (blankets, carpets, etc.) continued to be dull. Exports to China turned upward.

Polyester filament production declined by 2.6% to 120,984 tons. Apparel applications such as women’s wear were low in general, and application in interior goods lacked vigor. In industrial applications, use for construction materials and vehicles was active.

Polypropylene staple fiber production rose by 2.4% to 61,671 tons, as application in nonwovens for sanitary products was vigorous.
