According to statistics compiled by the Japan Sewing Machinery Manufacturers Association based on statistics released from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Ministry of Finance (MOF), business in sewing machines was low during January-March 2020, with production, exports and imports decreasing from the year before.
January-March 2020 production of sewing machines sharply decreased by 25% year-on-year to 27,316 machines, and the value dropped 32.4% to 4,551 million yen. The production of household sewing machines fell 20.5% in terms of volume, and that of industrial sewing machines dropped 27.6%.
First-quarter exports of both household and industrial sewing machines decreased by 14.9% in quantity and 45.9% in value to 84,809 machines worth 4,842.37 million yen. Both household and industrial sewing machines posted decreases.
The situation was the same for imports with decreases across the board.
